A Glimpse into Arrowsmith's History and Community

Arrowsmith's history dates back to its founding on December 7, 1871, by Charles W. Holder and Owen T. Reeves. Initially, the founders kept their identities private for two years. Both were experienced land dealers from Bloomington and played a role in the development of the Lafayette Bloomington and Muncie Railroad. The village was named after the township, which in turn honored early settler Ezekiel Arrowsmith. Interestingly, several of the first buildings in Arrowsmith were moved from the nearby settlement of Senex, showcasing the resourcefulness of the early community.

The original town design was centered around the railroad grounds, with eight blocks north and south of the tracks. Early businesses primarily lined Main Street north of the tracks, while the depot was located on the south side. The Lafayette Bloomington and Muncie Railroad was later leased and then purchased by the Lake Erie and Western Railroad, which is the name it is often remembered by. Arrowsmith was officially incorporated as a village in April 1890. The population growth was gradual, reaching 317 people by 1900.
