Prior to European colonization, the area was home to members of the Naumkeag, Pennacook, Pawtucket, and Massachusett tribes. Swampscott was first colonized by Europeans in 1629 when Francis Ingalls settled there, establishing the first Massachusetts Bay Colony tannery. The town also holds historical significance as the final home of General John Glover, a key figure in the Revolutionary War, in Vinnin Square. Originally part of Lynn, Swampscott was officially incorporated as a separate town in 1852.
